About Andres Serrano:
Serrano is an American
artist who worked as an assistant art director at an advertising firm before
creating his first works in 1983. Many of his pieces were made to receive angry
reactions. His choice for his photography is large
prints of about 20 by 30 inches (51 by 76 cm).
About the Piece:
The full title is Immersion (Piss Christ). This
piece is one of a series of photographs that depict classical statuettes
submerged in either milk, blood, or urine. The photograph is a 60x40 inch Cibachrome
print. Serrano stated that “while this work is not intended to denounce
religion, it alludes to a perceived commercializing or cheapening of Christian
icons in contemporary culture.”
